# What is an Energy Shift?

Energy Shift can work with your compatible Nest thermostat to adjust your thermostat's settings to help you save energy while heating or cooling.[Footnote 11](#first-foot-note-1) You’re always in control and have the ability to override adjustments on your device or in app at any time. Energy Shift is powered by [Renew Home in partnership with Google Nest](https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/16261874).

## How do they work?

Today, we support two types of Energy Shifts. These shifts can help you save energy and support a cleaner, more reliable grid for your community, and use less electricity during peak times.

**1\. Standard savings**

These Energy Shifts can now happen for two reasons, each of which helps the grid in different ways. When an energy partner, like a utility, retail energy provider, grid operator, or community choice aggregator signals that the grid in your area is stressed and in need of support, we may run an Energy Shift to help you save and support your community during these times. We may also run Energy Shifts to help save at times when available sources of power are less clean. Running an Energy Shift can help contribute to a stronger, more flexible energy grid built for the future. These Energy Shifts are primarily designed to shift the timing of electricity use from your heating and cooling system, and these shifts typically result in net energy savings for you.

* **Automatically included:** These shifts are included with Nest Renew and are automatically turned on.
* **Always in control:** You’re always in control and can opt out or override adjustments on your device or in app at any time. You can also turn Standard savings off on the Settings page under ‘Standard savings.’
* **Based on location:** These Energy Shifts are based on your U.S. home address.
    * Standard savings isn’t available in Alaska, Hawaii, or the following zip codes:
        *   _California zip codes: 90704_
        *   _Maine zip codes: 04730, 04732, 04734, 04735, 04736, 04738,04740, 04742, 04745, 04746, 04750, 04751, 04756, 04757, 04758, 04760, 04761, 04762, 04763, 04766, 04769, 04772, 04773, 04775, 04779, 04780, 04783, 04785, 04786, 04787, 04851, and 04852._

**2\. Time-of-use savings**

These Energy Shifts can happen when the cost of energy is more expensive, which is determined by the rate plan with your energy provider. If you are on a time-of-use rate plan, Nest Renew can help you save by adjusting your heating and cooling schedule to help reduce electricity use during ‘peak time’ when electricity is more expensive for you.

* **Turn on or link your energy provider account:** To access these shifts, you can either manually update your time-of-use rate information on the Settings page under ‘Time-of-use savings’ or where available, you can [link your energy provider account](https://support.renewhome.com/en_us/categories/link-utility-HJIVel_G1e) and we'll automatically update your time-of-use rate information.
* **Always in control:** You’re always in control and can opt out or override adjustments at any time on your Nest thermostat or in your app. You can also turn them off on the Settings page under ‘Time-of-use savings.’
* **Default peak time:** If you manually turn on these Energy Shifts and don’t adjust the Peak time, we’ll apply a default setting of 4:00 to 9:00 pm every day, which you are able to adjust in the Settings page under ‘Time-of-use savings.’ Learn how to manage your settings [here](/en_us/manage-your-nest-renew-settings-rJLthUzkg).
